Crunching KRCL

This past weekend, I started to write about how the new daytime format of KRCL wrapped up its first month of programming last Friday, and how, after giving the new stuff a fair amount of time to prove itself, I'm not really liking the music much at all.

[The whole story behind the format change was best explained by the City Weekly back in January]

As I was writing, it occurred to me that I should do a little research before I start shooting my mouth off, so... Here's what I did.

The playlists for the three new daytime programs, referred to as "Morning", "Mid Day", and "Afternoon", are made available on the KRCL website. I opened each playlist for every weekday in May (Monday, May 5, through Friday, May 30) and did a quick copy-paste into a spreadsheet. That was a relatively easy process. Cleaning up the data took significantly longer because of an amazing amount of misspellings and the frequent use of alternate artist names ("Black Crows", "Black Crowes", "The Black Crowes", etc.) I did what I could to establish some kind of consistency within the data.

After I compiled the spreadsheets, I imported them into MS Access and constructed a few simple queries to create a set of Last.fm-type of reports for the month of May.

The following numbers likely contain a few errors. I probably didn't catch all of the misspellings, and I didn't attempt to verify names or titles unless there was an obvious discrepancy. I also grouped artist together who recorded under different names -- i.e. listings for Jimi Hendrix and the Jimi Hendrix Experience were combined in the tables as just Jimi Hendrix. And, since these numbers are based on the published playlists, they are only as accurate as the reporting done by the staff at KRCL. If it wasn't reported in the online playlists, it didn't get into my data.

With those disclaimers in place, here is what the overall artist count looked like.

There were 930 unique artists played on the weekday daytime shows in May. This is the ranking of artists that were played 10 or more times:

Remember When The Black Keys 4

That's what the first month of the "new" daytime format looked like. Remember, this change in programming was implemented in an effort to increase the size of the listening audience in order to avoid losing federal funding from Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

KRCL received a grant of $195,000 to fund a Station Renewal study. They hired a consultant.

What we are hearing now, and what you see in these lists, is apparently the result of that process.

And again, I don't make any claims about the actual validity of any of these numbers. These are the results I got from scraping the KRCL online playlists and the probability that errors exist in those playlists and in my summaries is probably 100%.

It's great that you took the time to crunch words, numbers, etc. I will soon study your data much more closely to come to an initial conclusion.

(KRCL years on-air: 1984 - 1987: Scooba Dooba); All

I must say that I started listening to KRCL because they played more indie music than any other station in town. But that's all changed now.

I like the music they're playing now, but I loved finding new artists from the Breakfast Jam and Drive Time DJ's who had AMAZING taste in indie rock.

I even liked the world, jazz and folk music during the nights and weekends! Basically, it was the best station. It's sad to see corporate takeovers like this.

I've been pretty unimpressed with the "new and improved" KRCL as well. I absolutely loved it before, and now it's just flat for me. I haven't heard anything lately that gets me digging through my purse for paper and pen to write down the name of the song/artist. Bad Brad's show is the best of all three, but it sounds to me like someone told him to stop speaking with any cadence to his voice and stop sounding like he actually cared about the music he was playing. Dave Perschon couldn't sound more uninvolved or uninterested if he tried. I still listen because I'm hopeful that they'll get it figured out, but I'm soooo much more likely to hit my CD player or Ipod as soon as they start playing something that doesn't interest me. It's happening a lot more often now. I hate the Rolling Stones. I can't stand that Cat Power sound, please, just SING, I haven't heard Lucinda Williams in weeks, or the Drive By Truckers, oh but I guess that stuff has too much twang...*sigh* Anyway, thanks for putting in the research. And thanks for letting me rant.

Oh, Anonymous. I feel your pain. I would love to try to convince you of the merits of Cat Power sometime, and try to get you to reconsider your opinion of Brad, perhaps over a pitcher or a couple of drinks at a local bar. Yes, we need to commiserate and try to come to some sort of understanding. Please feel free to e-mail me... formaline@gmail.com

Oh I still love Bad Brad, don't get me wrong, like I said, I think he's the best of all three, but I really miss Roots and Blues, I even loved the theme song, and all the Drive Times. I miss them all, even Rene and Dawn, who kind of annoyed me but I still loved their show anyway. I'll try to keep an open mind about Cat Power, really, I will, but I'm not really into that wispy sound-like-they-have-cotton-in-their-mouth thing...I liked the twang/roots rock/americana they so ruthlessly got rid of. *sigh* I also just liked the personality of each show. Now I just don't feel as loyal, and it makes me really sad. (Granted I don't listen to any other radio station, but as I said I'm more likely to pop a cd in that before.) *heavy sigh*

Thanks again for your comments. I'm sort of feeling like my sense of disappointment has finally given way to acceptance. I was planning on updating the playlist statistics each month, but honestly, but the end of June, I wasn't really interested in the station all that much. I still tune in occasionally, but I'm finding that I'm buying more new music, listening to stations online, and delving more deeply into my iTunes library.

I'll compile a Cat Power CD for you any time. Her earlier stuff was darker and more moody than her last 2 or 3 CDs.

Well I am a hardened disciple of Dr Gianni Fever. In my opinion, the best show KRCL has aired since I started listening 12 years ago. Funny, informative, smartass and amazing taste and variety in music. No one does what he does. When he got booted from Monday Drive I tried to listen to Brad but after a full week of his hokey imbecile routine I was just disgusted. Now I stay up late on monday night just to hear his new show. Check it out, he is as good as it gets.
